Czech Zombie
česky: Velkopřílepský horor
is a sci-fi/horror film with a 90s vibe and electronica music shot with flying drones. I got great crew. Wind and low batteries didn't stop us.

We have a trailer and footage for 30-min long film. Now we need your support to finish the production.

We have launched our Kickstarter Campaign.

If I didn't tell you about it, you wouldn't think that the whole film was shot with flying drones only. So here I go.

I was always inspired by 80s and 90s music and movies. And when I got my first drone in January 2018 I noticed that the footage looks cinematic even without any special equipment. I realised that the time to create super epic film has come. I wrote the script, found all team members online, took my $4.000 and started shooting.

Zombie SFX

I was happy when Jakub Gründler, one of the top SFX artists in Europe joined us. He sometimes had to create up to 6 zombies a day. The easiest zombie required 1 hour and the "close-up zombie" up to 4-5 hours. He used silicon and magic. Jakub also taught our zombies to walk "properly" (I still don't get it, how could he know how zombies walk?).

DOP

Bruno Pimentel, our DOP aka camera pilot  was brave enought to enter the project even after listening to all my crazy ideas (something like: you start here with a pan shot then go 5 meters up and follow the car from above, ok?). We used 2 drones: DJI Mavic Pro Platinum (my drone) for close ups and indoor shots and DJI Inspire 1 (Bruno's drone) for outdoor and wide shots.

We were shooting only with drones in the air — that means, the drones flew in the air and we operated them with controllers only. We were never holding drones with hands while shooting. We were practicing for 3 days (with cars and on foot), before I understood that we can start adding actors and crew members on set. We've even shot a super cheesy cliché step out of the car scene.

FPV Drones

Our FPV drone pilot Vojtech Pollak did great job flying around zombies. Art combined with racing drone skills.

Production Pros & Cons

Shooting the entire film with flying drones had some advantages but also some limitations.

Production Pros & Cons

Shooting the entire film with flying drones had some advantages but also some limitations.

Limitations

Low batteries –

Mavic Pro Platinum gave us 15-25 minutes. Inspire 1 worked for about 10-15 minutes. Low battary sound became our the production soundtrack. Hate that sound now!

Wind –

Imagine flying close to an actor in the wind. Also the shot should be smooth!

Close ups –

We had no option to change the lens, so the only way to have a close-up was to fly closer to an actor. We had to use prop guards and gloves to keep the actors safe.

Fixed focal length –

Our consumer drone Mavic Pro had a little option to focus, and we had only one lens for Inspire 1 (without an option to focus). We now have to separate the character from the background. It means masking and blurring in almost each scene to make actors/objects stand out and add cinematic look which we all love. This requires time and skills of VFX artists.

Czech Zombie Kinol

No sound –

Just silence. All sounds in post production.

Advantages +

Flying dolly +

We didn't need a dolly or a crane which helped us keep the costs down.

Mobile +

We could change the camera position in seconds.

Follow me +

Just fly with me!

Improvisation +

we could improvise (you can always fly somewhere and end the shot differently)
